You take many decision’s in your life after consulting friends and family so why not take a second opinion for the most important thing that is your HEALTH.

Just imagine how many people you consulted and took advise before buying your last vehicle or your house. You tried gathering as much information as possible so that your decision is right.

When should I get a second opinion before having surgery?

For Cardiac Surgery, time is the most important factor. Sooner you take the second opinion, better it is for you. Give yourself ample time to collect relevant information to take your decision. Delaying surgery in the name of collecting information or taking second opinion will never help you.

How should I ask a doctor for a second opinion?

Share all your reports and medical history with the doctor directly. Tell the second doctor about the diagnosis and advise given by the first doctor. Do not tell the second doctor what you want or what is your opinion as it is irreverent. Take his objective response and corelate with your information. Do not be emotional when taking the second opinion.

Is it not insulting my current doctor if I go somewhere else for second opinion?

As per the standard medical practice, you should go for the second opinion. It is not an insult to your current doctor. Even doctor’s do the same as their own process and in diagnosing the problem. You should not feel any hesitation or shame or guilt in taking the second opinion. In a good medical practice some doctor’s give their patients the name of other specialists and surgeons to talk to without even being asked.

What Happens after I get a second opinion?

It depends on what advice you get in the second opinion. If it is the same then the line of treatment is clear and if there is a difference, try to understand the reason for it. Go for the arguments for & against for each opinion you have taken. Evaluate all the pros and cons, follow up with your doctor and discuss the matter with friends & relatives who is reliable and trustworthy. It is a phenomenon that the second opinion will sound smarter than the first but, it may or may not be better. In the end you may need to go with your gut. The doctor you trust more or the approach that makes sense points in the direction that is right for you.

When Should I need to get a third opinion?

After taking two opinion’s usually you will have a lot of information to consider the course of treatment. But in case if you still feel confused and find that the information provided is not sufficient to take the final decision, you may go for the third opinion. Here it is important to note that while taking the third opinion, you should go back to the basics of your medical condition and symptoms and honestly address your concerns to the third doctor. You can also ask your doctor to whom you have consulted to talk to each other. Having an open, frank discussion of different opinions may help you take the final decision.

Is it better to go outside my doctor’s medical center for my second opinion?

Second opinion means consulting a different doctor but not necessarily require a different institution. A doctor from the same hospital should give an honest, objective opinion even if it challenges the opinion of a colleague, but if you are not happy going that route, then ask your doctor for names at a different hospital.
