“Doctor, Is Surgery Really the Only Option? Isn’t There Another Way?”
Dil Se Dil Sudhi — Episode 1 | Heart to Heart with Dr. Bhupesh D. Shah
One evening, a man in his early fifties walked into the OPD.
His face carried worry. His eyes carried fear.
I reviewed his ECG and reports. I studied his angiography.
The blockage was severe. Surgery was the only way forward.
I explained it to him calmly. “You will need bypass surgery.”
For a few moments, the room went completely silent.
Then he spoke, quietly. “Doctor, is surgery really necessary? Isn’t there another way?”
I asked, “What are you afraid of?”
“Doctor… my neighbour’s father-in-law, after his surgery…” The sentence was left unfinished.
But the meaning was clear.
Many people had said many things. “Avoid surgery.” “Try home remedies.” “I saw a video on YouTube, medicines can fix it too.” “Once you go on the operation table, who knows what the doctor is really doing?”
The fear had grown bigger than the disease itself.
I asked him a simple question. “If the roof of your house is about to collapse, would you just paint over it and forget? Or would you fix the foundation?”
He stayed silent.
“That’s exactly what the heart is. Medicine is often like paint. Surgery is the foundation.”
At that moment, his wife, who had been sitting quietly until now, spoke up. “Doctor, we will go ahead with the surgery. I was scared at home, but now I understand.”
The surgery was successful.
Three months later, the same man came back for his follow-up. The fear on his face was gone. In its place was a quiet, grateful smile.
He said, “Doctor, we should not be afraid of surgery. We should be afraid of not having it when we need it.”
That one sentence said everything.
Today, social media is flooded with information about heart disease. Some say surgery is dangerous. Some say home remedies are enough. Some say doctors only scare patients for money.
But the person making that video will never look at your ECG. They will never read your angiography. They will never take responsibility for your life.
Your surgeon will.
It is natural to be afraid. Ask questions, please do. But do not trust your heart to Google and gossip.
Because surgery repairs the heart. But the right trust and the right decision at the right time, that is what truly saves a life.
If this story touched you, please share it with someone you love. Spreading awareness about heart disease is a responsibility we all share.
